One of the big things that I know comes up in my community is that you’re worried you won’t get hired because you’re green and now even more so that COVID has been hanging around for far too long.
This episode I am going to bust the myth that Yachts aren’t hiring green crew with COVID affecting the industry.
Because here’s a truth bomb… The Yachting Industry has not been as heavily affected as other industries such as airline or cruise ship sector.
In a way it has caused many aspects of the industry to pivot online… and that’s for the better. I’m talking more advanced yacht crew platforms… more online interviews…. More connections being able to be made thanks to the likes of the internet and social media.
I’ve spoken to Captains, Chief stews, Yacht Crew agents, Charter Brokers and Yacht crew owners… they have all come to the conclusion yachting has carried on through the entire pandemic.
Here’s what they said:
Yacht Crew– We’re used to isolating we live on a boat together with the same people for lenghy periods of time and often don’t mingle with others as we are stuck onboard. Nothing much in terms of work has changed for us.
Yacht Crew Agents– Yachts have continued to hire, even more so now with the upcoming season. Boats will always need crew to run and maintain the vessel.
Charter Brokers– We have had an influx of guests who have never chartered boats before, these are the people who are wealthy and would usually opt for luxury hotel stays over luxury yacht holidays. However now with boats being able to move more freely around, it’s the perfect holiday option.
Yacht Owners– Our boats are like our second homes, it’s a safe zone and somewhere we can enjoy a holiday without worrying about being around other people and the virus. We have everything we could possibly need onboard… five-star service, food, wine and facilities what more could you want.
So that should put things into perspective for you.
In a recent survey I posted, I had yacht crew tell me what their upcoming season is looking like for the med. 45% of them answered ‘usual season with boss on or several charters booked’ Followed by another 20% saying they ahve a few charters and trips planned for the season with potentially more last-minute trips”
Now following on from this survey out of 209 people 151 said that their boat hires green yacht crew.
Let me repeat that 151 experienced yachties currently onboard said there boats hire green crew… this is only a small minority from my survey but if you break that down and say each one of those 151 people are on a different boat. I think that stat in itself just about busts the myth and statement I hear so often…. that Yachts don’t hire green crew.
Want more proof? Ok you asssked for it.
Let’s take one of my Yachting Kickstarter students colleen for example, she was based in the states so she made her way to Fort Lauderdale, followed the yachting guides, day worked, and then got a temp job cruising the Bahamas. She then secured a permanent position onboard in March and has now had to step up as sole stew due to her chief stew
We also have Emily who lost her job as a hostess as made the transition to yachting. She followed my yachting guides, went to Palma to get all her qualifications, put her name and CV out there in all the right places and the day after she finished her STCW she had a job in Monaco.
Let me remind you each and every yacht crew member was once a green crew member… we all started from the bottom.
Yes there’s a series of steps to take to help you fast-track your way to getting a job onboard all of which I delve into The Yachting Kickstarter course, however, I want you to know it’s possible green crew can get jobs, I’m walking talking proof of that along with every other yachtie.
On that note the doors for the yachting Kickstarter guide will be opening in a few week’s time so if you haven’t already head over to theseaworthystew.com/kickstart to join the crew who are already on the waitlist!
